Xi’an’s Beilin Historic & Cultural District is a key pillar of the city’s Imperial-City Revival strategy, set on growing the local cultural economy, promoting Xi’an’s cultural brand and building a more globally significant cultural landmark through the planning, upgrade and renovation of the whole district. Structured around interviews with the operating team, the designers and the developer — and combining live-action filming with 3D animation and other techniques — the film presents the district’s planning strategy and its vision for renewal.
Shenzhen Civic Square Light Show
To mark the 40th anniversary of China’s Reform and Opening-up, THUPDI and shard island created a lighting project for the Civic Square — a magnificent night-scape spectacle.
CO·II
For Beijing Design Week 2018, under the theme “Symbiosis · New Courtyard,” Yanjingli invited its resident image-creative studio — Beijing Shard Island Technology Co., Ltd. — to design and build the main installation, CO·II, together with Atelier You. CO·II is a pure-white rectangular tent set at the very centre of the Yanjingli courtyard for symmetry and balance. Two layers of gauze curtain, inner and outer, separate its interior from the world outside, giving it two wholly different characters by day and by night. By day it is an experiential space; by night the tent becomes a visual canvas, hosting a series of light-and-shadow performances designed and produced by Shard Island that fuse body-motion tracking and lighting control with the music, costume and visual-notation (Votation) work of the invited artists.

The video is about the central plaza of 2020 World Expo, the roof of the architecture is composed of circular element, symbolizing the concept of gathering. During the daytime, the roof is just like a tent and provide shade to the people, while the evening is coming, the central platform will rise, and become an outdoor theatre. The pavilion is just like the oasis hidden in the desert.
Shard Island tailored the animation for BIG, presented its design visually.
UAE Pavilian
The theme of 2020 Expo UAE Pavilion is Sustainability, flowability and opportunity. The project defines the three combined theme areas as “connect the mind, create the future”.
The appearance of the building is tough, but its shape is like a tent. Rigid geometry combining with the soft curve, represents the coexistence of cultural blending of UAE.

Vanke Expo Legacy Plan
“Dragon Plan” is initiated by seven organization and enterprises, which are Vanke group, the National Heritage Board of Shanxi province, Ruicheng County government, Taiyuan Vanke, URBANUS, Architectural Design & Research Institute of Tsinghua University and Shanxi Youth daily. It is the first public financing project, which aims to reuse the legacy of 2015 Milan Expo Vanke Pavilion to fund the environmental renovation project of Guangrenwang Temple in Ruicheng county Shanxi province.
